| BIKE RIDERS | QUAD RIDERS |
|
Its really not as bad as you think. Remember, every person that
started riding had to start somewhere and with something. This is the
type of sport which you have to try first, if it grabs you, you will never
let go - well that's unless you do something stupid which you are going to
regret. The cheapest way to find out whether this is what you want to
do, is borrow a bike and some kit from a friend. If you're hooked,
then the next step is to get your own bike and kit. Don't go and spend all your money on something you are not sure about. Speak to as many people as you can and get all the information that you will need to make an informed decision. The people in this sport will almost bend over backwards to help you and that's because we are all friends. When you buy a bike it's best not to get something new when you start. You will quickly find out that you seem to be damaging more of your bike or yourself once you have started. Learn the ropes and ride with people who know the area you want to ride in. Soon enough you will pick up a huge amount of tips that will help you enjoy the sport. You will also reach a stage in your riding career that you want to ride in competitions. This is great, as it will help you gain alot of experience, but be aware that this can be a costly exercise for a private individual. Here are some of the things to remember when you start riding! 1. Make sure your bike is topped up with fuel!!!!! 2. Maintain your bike. You wouldn't want to do it in the middle of nowhere. 3. If you are starting off you must at least use a helmet, gloves, goggles and protective footwear. 4. Come prepared for every ride that you go on. It is not nice to have to hold up your friends. 5. Always ride with liquids or some sort of camelback. You will be amazed at how hot it gets. 6. Know how to fix a puncture on your bike or quad. 7. Quads - Must put at least one bottles of Safe Seal (similar product) in your tyres for De Wildt. 8. Have a First Aid kit handy within the group. 9. Beware of riders from the oncoming direction and vehicles that may cross your path. 10. There are a lot of animals in this area - It is important to be aware of your surroundings. If you hit an animal you could be seriously injured. |

| We do this sport for FREEDOM and therefore we don't like to have rules and regulations. However general etiquette will ensure that everybody enjoys themselves and that a high level of respect is practised in our environment and the local community. Please take cognisance of the following points. |
SAFETY
| 1. ALWAYS WEAR A HELMUT
WHEN YOU RIDE 2. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT IS AN ADDED ADVANTAGE 3. FOOTWEAR SHOULD BE A RIDING BOOT OR SOME SORT OF HEAVY DUTY SHOE TO PROTECT YOUR FEET. 4. DO NOT ATTEMPT STUNTS OR TRICKS FOR WHICH YOU HAVE NOT BEEN TRAINED. 5. RIDE AT A PACE WITH WHICH YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE. 6. DO NOT GIVE INTO THE AGE OLD PEER PRESSURE THING OR DARES AS THIS WILL CERTAINLY LEAD TO INJURY OR DEATH. 7. NO ALCOHOL MAY BE CONSUMED BEFORE OR DURING RIDES |

RIDING ETIQUETTE
LOGIC AND COMMON SENSE IS THE BASIS OF A SAFE & SUCCESSFUL RIDE 1. Riding on public roads are prohibited. If you need to cross a road then do so with caution and consideration. If for some reason you do need to proceed on a tar road then keep left as far as possible and travel in single file. Do not proceed at speeds higher then 50Km/h. If you are caught by the Police do not pick a fight. Explain your situation and see if you can come to a compromise. If you are issued with a fine then accept the consequences. 2. Stay away from densely populated areas. 3. Do not race next to tar roads. If you need to proceed next to a tar road to get to the riding area then do so at a slow pace (10km/h). The dust that you create will cause an accident. Consider other traffic aswell. Travelling next to a tar road is prohibited. 4. Try not to ride in groups bigger than 15 riders. Proceed with your ride and do not hang around in a specifc area to long. If you want to hang around in a specific area then goto a designated Quad Park in your area. 5. Do not enter areas that have been fenced off. Fences are there for a reason IT IS PRIVATE PROPERTY!! 6. Doing doughnuts in front of shops, residential areas or public roads is not permitted - it only shows the rest of us what an IDIOT you are and hopefully somebody will give you a good "wake up call". 7. If you need to overtake a vehicle on a dust road then proceed in a fashion that will not ROOST the vehicle with dust and stones. "Roosting" other riders and vehicles is not COOL!! 8. Stay on designated routes and paths, this will definitely minimize the damage to the environment. If you do not know the route then link up with local riders who know the area and get to know the route. It is not necessary to make new routes in the same area. 9. You gain riding ettiquette when you know how to ride your machine with consideration & respect. Riding at a pace that exceeds your capabilities is a sure way of injuring or killing yourself. You determine the pace that you ride at and other riders will respect you for it. 10. Make use of local riding academies to show you the ropes. You will gain valuable experience on the do's and don'ts of riding in various situations. |
GENERAL ETIQUETTE
|
1. We leave as a group and we return as a group. 2. The first rider will wait at a confirmed point so that all the other riders can catch up. 3. If a rider falls then the next rider will stop to acess the situation. 4. If you get lost, do not despair as you will be found. Follow these easy steps: 4a. At the point you realize that you are lost switch off your bike and listen for other riders. 4b. If you do not hear other riders take a moment to survey you surroundings, it may look familiar. 4c. If you do not recognise your surroundings take note of where you are, (make some sort of beacon), then proceed back from where you were coming till the first junction that you cross. Here you must wait till somebody will find you. DO NOT PROCEED ON YOUR OWN, UNLESS YOU ARE VERY EXPERIENCED. 4d. If you are in a local community ask for help or directions to the nearest familiar place. 5. Riders that invite friends must take full responsibilty to ensure that their friends are not left behind. The group on a whole will do a full count at every point of confirmation. 6. Should a guest rider feel that an easier route needs to be taken then the Host rider will oblige so that the guest does not get lost. 7. If there is a breakdown or an injury then the group must NOT deviate from contingency plans. 8. If you come across riders on the same path from the opposite direction, inform them of how many riders are still behind you. 9. Always offer assistance where possible. 10. Go out, have fun and ride at your own PACE. |

CHAIN MAINTENANCE
|
Your chain is another important part on your bike/quad. If this breaks
then you can have all sorts of problems from holes in your crank case to
standing still in the middle of nowhere............... 1. After your ride wash your bike and chain with prepsol cleaner to remove all grime lodged between the links. Once you have cleaned the chain do not allow it to rust, and never ride your bike/quad in this condition. 2. Allow the chain to dry and then spray Q20 on the chain to remove any last moisture. 3. Once the chain is totally moisture free, lubricate the chain with a recommended offroad lubricant, eg Motul. 4. Always ride with a spare master link when doing enduro's and trail riding. |
AIR FILTER MAINTENANCE
|
Your air filter is the most important part on your bike/quad that needs very
regular maintenance and cleaning. If this is not done it could
cost you an engine in the long run, personally I would rather pay for some
air filter oil than a new engine. 1. Remove the air filter after every ride and inspect the amount of dirt & dust on the filter. My advice is that you clean the air filter anyway even if it looks clean. 2. Remove the inner metal gauze frame and blow clean with compressed air. 3. Take the air filter (sponge) and clean it with petrol. Then let it dry. Then wash it with liquid soap and water and let it dry. 4. Once the air filter is dry put it in a plastic bag and pour foam filter oil over it in moderation. Squeeze the filter continuously until the whole surface is covered. Add filter oil as needed. Do not put excessive oil on the air filter as this can clogg your carbs 5. Re-insert the inner metal gauze and put back the air filter. Do not attempt to ride your bike/quad without an air filter as this will seriuosly damage your engine. |
ENGINE MAINTENANCE
|
Your engine is the only part of your bike I believe that does not need to be
tampered with unless it is done by the professionals. However a little
care will take you a long way before you ever need to send it in to have it
repaired. 1. Engine oil should be checked before and after every ride. For 2 strokes and 4 strokes people all have different answers but this is my suggestion. 2. 2 strokes should change their oil after every 3rd ride and 4 strokes should change their oil after every 8th ride. This is only a guideline so don't hold me to it. 3. 2 Strokes - Remove the filler plug and sump plug and drain the oil into a sealable container. Tilt the bike till all the oil has been drained. Close the sump plug and fill the engine with oil as per manufacturers specifications. 4. 4 Strokes - Remove the filler plug and sump plug and drain the oil into a sealable container. Tilt the bike till all the oil has been drained. Sometimes it helps to crank the engine to pump out the old oil at the oil filter compartment. 4 strokes usually have an oil filter that needs to be replaced aswell. Remove the oil filter and drain the excess oil. Replace the old oil filter with a new one and close the cover. Once all the oil has been drained replace the sump plug and fill the engine with oil as per the manufacturers specifications. 5. It would also be advisable to change the spark plug on regular intervals. If this is done then keep the old one as a backup if you are sure that it still works properly. It is always handy to have one when you are riding enduro's and trails. |
GENERAL BIKE CLEANING
|
It is always advisable to clean your bike/quad as soon as possible after
your ride. This depends on whether you have been riding on mine dumps
or in the bush. To clean your machine is rather easy, all you need is
a degreaser such as Prepsol, high pressure washer and some soft rags to wipe
the bike/quad dry. If you find that your plastics have faded then you
can finish off by using a spray polish or a silicone spray to bring back the
colour. 1. Use a squirt bottle to spray on Prepsol all over the bike/quad and apply generously to parts that are extra dirty like chains, brakes and shocks. 2. Once you have sprayed your bike/quad use the high pressure washer to clean your bike/quad. Make sure that you remove all the dirt in the hard to get places. Usually the pressure will dislodge any dirt or sand that you would not otherwise be able to see. Remember not to spray to close to your stickers as the pressure can peel your stickers off. 3. Once your machine has been sprayed clean use a soft towel or cloth to wipe your bike/quad clean. Leave your bike in the sun for an hour so that any excess moisture can be evaporated. 4. Once your machine is dry you can add to the shine by applying a plastic polish of some sort. This will enhance the look and colour of your bike/quad. 5. Once your bike/quad is clean check your air filter, chain and engine. |
