QUADS 4 QUADS
ADVENTURE MX WILL BE BRINGING YOU LIVE UPDATES OF QUADS 4 QUADS AS WE ARE EXPERIENCING IT.  UPDATES SHOULD TAKE PLACE AT THE END OF EACH DAY (HOPEFULLY BY 8pm EVERY NIGHT).   WE WILL BRING YOU A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE DAYS HAPPENINGS, WITH SOME STATS AND PHOTO'S TO KEEP YOU IN THE LOOP TO WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING.

DAY 1 - 20 SEPTEMBER 2007
START: Thunder Valley
FINISH: Standerton
Distance: 205km

After many months of planning and every member of the group contributing towards getting things done, the day finally arrived.  If you ever saw a convoy then this was a sight to see.  With 2 16 seater buses, 2 trucks, cars and trailers we left for the start of Quads 4 Quads.

Just before the Start of Q4Q's.
wpe2F.jpg (14261 bytes)

One of the only river crossings that we had today.  There was a hole just at the end of the crossing which was nice and deep which played havoc for some of the riders.   Plenty of the 2 wheelers had to push their bikes out.

In the second photo Kurt just had to show the rest of us how it's done.  Nothing like a big splash to cool things down.  However, you can't cool down spirits that are high.

Our STAR of today! Robyn Cotton.  She did very well under the circumstances as she woke up this morning with flu and during the ride she sprained her wrist when she accidently hit a log in a tunnel.

DAY 2 - 21 SEPTEMBER 2007
START: Standerton
FINISH: Newcastle
Distance: 250km

Geesh! Was it F*cking cold last night.  We even had ice on our seats.  Some of us got an early rise as we could no longer hold out against the cold.  Early morning coffee or tea just tastes better when you had a crappy night.   Below are photo's of our campsite being packed up for the great trek to Newcastle.
wpeE.jpg (15069 bytes)     wpe14.jpg (14682 bytes)

In Standerton we got a Police escourt to the starting point.  However we decided that we would wait till last to avoid the rush and to give ourselves a dust gap.
wpe1B.jpg (18520 bytes)     wpe1C.jpg (18475 bytes)

The roads to Memel where we had our lunch stop where pretty flat and open.  The faster riders would catch the slower ones very quickly along the route.  Below are some A-MX members having some fun taking corners trying to see who could slide out the best.
wpe1D.jpg (9229 bytes)     wpe26.jpg (7009 bytes)

Myself with Ryno (Jagshond) and Morne (Gifhond) having a photo moment at a Memel garage.  Morne had some electrical problems on his Kingquad but this was sorted out after about an hour of fault finding on the electronics.  Our backup van was also caught off guard with a puncture and when they wanted to repair it, they found out that they had lost the spare wheel.
wpe27.jpg (18685 bytes)      wpe1E.jpg (10501 bytes)

Having a smoke break along the route.  When we arrived in Newcastle we had to start with some major repairs.  A KTM 640 needed a rear tyre.  A KFX 400 needed  new front wheel bearings and chain and sprockets.  A LTZ 400 needed left front wheel bearings.  A TRX 400 needed new exhaust packing and the end cap had to be repaired and re-fitted. A TRX 450 needed a new axle as the sprocket hub was stripped on the ride.
A BIG THANK YOU TO INSANE ATV HELPING OUT ON SUCH SHORT NOTICE WITH A NEW AXLE!
wpe20.jpg (12381 bytes)    wpe21.jpg (16078 bytes)

Work carried out into the night with many of the riders giving a helping hand which really makes for great socializing.
wpe22.jpg (16476 bytes)     wpe23.jpg (13038 bytes)
As you can see the front sprocket was completely worn down.
wpe24.jpg (11481 bytes)     wpe25.jpg (8792 bytes)

After a hard days ride we had some maintenance to do which I suppose is all about the fun.  One thing I can say is that till this far we have been pretty well prepared.

DAY 3 - 22 SEPTEMBER 2007
START: Newcastle
FINISH: Weenan
DISTANCE: 250km

Today started bright and early with picking up Lyndsay's (Plothond) axle from Time Freight in Newcastle.  A big thank you to Insane ATV Products for coming to the party when it really counts.  Leon (Master Farter) also helped out at a moments notice by giving me a ride to a spare shop to get some nuts & washers.  The quad was ready to roll by 9am.  The sun was as hot as ever today and the dust was just as bad as yesterday.  Everybody is fighting to stay in front or ride in such a manner as to maintain a dust gap.  We had 3 fuel stops today as the route got slightly more technical then yesterday and therefore we where using more fuel.   There where also quite a couple of accidents but luckily no-one in our group was involved.  What is interesting to see is how many quads and bike start breaking down as the trip progresses.  Unfortunately at the moment I don't have to many photo's but as soon as more are available then I will post them.

At the lunch spot!

Taking a break in one of the mountain passes between Newcastle and Weenen.  There were some good twisty sections which one could really throw the quad into the corners!

The campsite at Weenen!  Lyndsay (Plothond) was our designated DJ for the evening!
wpe1C.jpg (10090 bytes)     wpe1E.jpg (15871 bytes)

Drinking competitions were the order of the evening!  However nobody could beat Kurt who can down a beer in 2-3 seconds flat.

One of the Babes in the Weenen campsite.  She really did put some guys into agony!

DAY 4 - 23 SEPTEMBER 2007
START: Weenen
FINISH: Ballito
Distance: 245km

My morning started off pretty hectic.  The last 3 days I was always on of the last ones to leave and today I wanted to be one of the 1st ones to leave.  However this was not to be as I was called in to help with a Kingquad that battled to start and idle properly.  After working through some systematic checks I discovered that the Kingquad had no oil in it.  It took more oil then what it get on a full service.  By the time we got the Kingquad sorted out I got all my goods packed I was one of the last  riders to leave the campsite.

Today's riding I enjoyed the most, with forest roads, winding mountain passes, in between sugar cane fields was all part of the last days riding.  We got some nice technical sections to do, climbing up a rocky mountain section and then having to get down again.  We stopped for lunch at Seven Oaks and by this time I had caught up to the main group and I was running in the top twenty of all the riders.  I had caught up and passed all the riders from my group except for 2.  I scoffed down my lunch at Seven Oaks and chased off to catch the 1st two riders of our group.  I was riding at a phenominal pace and overtaking riders at every corner.  About 180km's into the days ride I managed to blow my whole exhaust apart.  I had to stop and do repairs but I was soon on my way again.  It wasn't long and I could hear that the repair was not holding up so I had to finish the ride with a very loud exhaust, or what remained of it.

I eventually arrived at Cane Cutters at about 14:00pm.  I had finished the ride being in the top bunch of riders that had finished early.  I had left just after nine in the morning and I got their at two in the afternoon.  With 4 fuel stops and a lunch break that wasn't bad going considering we had technical sections and mountain passes to contend with.  When I arrived at Cane Cutters I was also informed that one of our riders took a tumble just before the lunch spot and that he had broken hi arm quite badly.  He was rushed off to Hospital in Pietermaritzburg where we where told that everything was O.K.

The day ended off with a mass ride into Cane Cutters where most of the quads rode in behind Ari from QASA.  A couple of speeches and some trophies where handed out.   Our group was nominated for the best Team Spirit.  Not bad for bunch of guys and girls who enjoyed themselves till the early hours of the morning.

Ryno lying on the ground after coming off his quad just before Seven Oaks! Nothing like a puff when you have had a roll in the ( I was going to say hay, but lets keep it to) dirt.  And if my Biology is correct then he picked up one very well broken Humerus.
wpe23.jpg (16567 bytes)     wpe22.jpg (15695 bytes)

The last day to Ballito had phenominal mountain sections to ride in.  The roads where in excellent condition.  Below Lyndsay (Plothond) having a word with Glen from Family Adventures.
wpe24.jpg (12425 bytes)     wpe25.jpg (15498 bytes)

Our campsite behind Cane Cutters in Ballito.  By this time we had all had enough riding for the next week anyway.  Later in the afternoon it started to rain which was a welcome relief from the hot weather we experienced from the previous 3 days.
