Adventure MX joins Family Adventures in the
Waterberg
DATE: 27 JANUARY 2007
PLACE: RHEMARDO / Waterberg
DISTANCE: ±140km
MEMBERS: Peter & Tanya, Lyndsay & Maryna, Kurt & Mikie, Riaan,
Roux, Chris & Inge, Rudi, Robyn, Laura, David, Mark
I was looking forward to this weekend for a long time. Even the last couple of
days before the event you almost can't seem to work as the excitement builds up.
Well, Friday arrived and we left Pretoria at 15h30pm, our destination was Rhemardo just on
the otherside of Naboomspruit. We arrived at about 17h30pm and off loaded the quads
and all our gear. Let the Party begin. Sundowners was first on the agenda and
then we had to make our way to Sediba for dinner and a riders briefing. The
restaurant was packed with enthusiastic participants and soon there was a brilliant
atmosphere of excitement with the anticipation of the next days ride. Some people
opted to have late nights with a lot "kuiring" and drinking. Well I am
sure the bar was happy with their turnover for the night.
The next day started off with some heavy heads but nonetheless, the
excitement was brewing and we had to get ready for a final riders briefing at 7:30 am.
We eventually made it to riders briefing at 7:45am which was late and we were told
to carry on with the ride as per the previous evenings rider briefing. Most of the
Adventure MX members opted for the technical route which had plenty of mud pits. I
must say these mud pits where definitely challenging giving many riders plenty of hard
work to get there machines out of the mud. The route had plenty of twist and turns
and you even had to watch out for low lying trees every now and then. The mud gave a
couple of quads over heating problems by clogging up the radiators. These mud pits played
havoc with many riders and if it wasn't for the utility quads and Rhino's pulling them out
then many riders wouldn't have made it to the lunch spot.
We had to travel for a couple of km's on gravel roads to get to the lunch spot.
There was nothing better than seeing a beautiful clear pool which we could
swim in and cool down. While the cooks prepared the meals everyone had the chance to
take a swim and recover from the heat during the first leg of the ride. Others did
minor repairs while others did their best to quench their thirst. There was also a
30km loop that could be done from the lunch stop. Some of the guys were able to do
it before lunch while others did it after lunch. Lunch was eventually ready and we
got some really good food - T-bones, pap & sous, potato salad, wors,
rolls and some really good farm bread. After lunch we were able to ride on a section of a
farm which had some wildlife. We saw a couple of wildebeest and antelope. This
route also had a couple of rocky sections and of course a couple of mud pits. Large
portions of the route was very sandy and a couple of nice straights to to get the blood
flowing again. This section eventually ended up at the lunch spot again. Then
it was back on the gravel roads to find the entry which would lead us back to our camp.
There is nothing better when you get back to camp then to park off in the shade
with an ice cold drink and some chips & dip to eat. Its then a matter of
listening to everyones version of what was the highlights of the day.
Dinner and prize giving was at 7:30pm which would be held at the Sediba restaurant. The
evening started off with all the video that was taken on the day. This provided many
laughs as we all got to see how everyone managed to get through the mud holes. A
little later Glenn then did a prize giving to some of the riders who had memorable events.
Prizes such as t-shirts, vouchers, hand guards and goggles where dished out.
Adventure MX was also a proud sponsor of prizes for this ride. The evening was
further celebrated as it was Kurt's birthday and this went right into the early hours of
Sunday morning. Kurt & Chris showed us how to sing on stage and they managed to
do it without the help of a Kareoke machine. Kurt also managed to do a solo by
singing his favourite song "Thunderstruck". With no fewer than a couple of
shooters, vodka and cokes and even some stroh rum I was still standing.
We all made it back safely to camp and slept till eight in the morning. Maryna
was good enough to cook us a Top Class breakfast which really went down well. Now it
was just to pack everything back onto the trailers and into the cars and then we all made
our way back home.
Well done to Glenn & Corinne from Family Adventure for an awesome ride. See
